Katie and her kittens

I remember Katie's last litter...she would bring them...then out of the blue take them elsewhere. The same holds true for her recent offspring. They had made their home under dad's old car and boom...they disappeared.

It was late in the afternoon a couple of days ago when I looked out the kitchen window and I saw something move in the small tree by dad's car. Sure enough it was her two kittens learning to go up and down the tree. One of them which for some reason I think it is a girl is the spitting image of Katie including her bunny tail. The other looks just like Nico but he is fixed so he is not the father.

My cellphone sucks so I was not able to take a good picture of them.  This one is when she is nursing them but again it is not a good quality photo.  Hopefully, I will get a chance to photograph them in the not too distant future.

I love watching the little kittens run around playing with tree sticks and limbs.  It reminded me of when my boys were small. Though I think they must be eight to nine weeks old.  I still do not believe she only had two kittens. Maybe she will bring the rest soon?

Incognito

Yesterday I was taking down some hand washables from my makeshift clothesline when I inadvertently looked up and was scared to death...I thought it was some sort of wild creature!

As usual, I did not have my phone on me so I went inside the house hoping that when I came back out Elvis would still be in the same location so I could document it.

So this is where he hides out high above the ground where he can survey what is going on around him as well as keeping an eye on me when I exit the kitchen door.

He blends in with the color of the mesquite tree.

As long as he does not pester me...I am fine with his new hideout now that I know its location.

Trip to Tractor & Supply

Yesterday when I finally drove into town I decided to stop at Tractor & Supply to pick up larger bags of pet food since their associates take them to my car and set them up in the front and back seat so I can easily cut the top with scissors and then fill my five-gallon buckets one at a time as you know I have a bad back and 20 lbs is the most I can carry...though I never push it to that much weight.

I was a little hesitant to go in since there were several cars in the parking lot more than are usually here...well post-pandemic.  I already had my face mask and gloves on before I left the house so headed inside the store.

I grabbed their special cart and quickly got what I needed. I must say that they were well stocked.

On my way out I passed by the chick aisle.  I think for those that know or have the desire to raise chickens now that eggs are so expensive this would be a good time to do so.

Unfortunately, it would not be beneficial for me...too much work!

Mr. Joe (neighbor) has free-range chickens and while in our property their offspring have been eaten by both Paquito and Nico though they had just finished eating...just part of their instinct :-(

Bitter sweet day

Today May 5th marks three years since Pedrito one of the four stray dogs I fostered disappeared.  Maybe "foster" is not the correct term since he came to mom's house on his own and no one ever showed any interest in adopting him.

I remember the last time I saw him like it was yesterday.  It was a Friday afternoon and he was pressuring me to feed him, he ate and off he went into the sunset.  I recall telling my mother that Pedrito had a better social life than I did...he probably had a date and was going to celebrate Cinco de Mayo with her.

I miss you my little one...:-(

Elvis is becoming a bully / A day of cat naps

Elvis is becoming a bully and is not letting Katie eat though I have set up different feeding stations for both. What pisses me off is that she is becoming subservient to his wishes.  If she eats in one he runs over to push her away and starts eating and vice versa.

She will not come to the mudroom unless I leave but I have to leave the door cracked so she can enter and that is when Elvis tries to rush in and I am not having any of that. Why is she so afraid of me? I had the same problem with Tammie the stray dog...I could never gain her confidence...yet one day the telephone guy or was it the cable guy came and she ran up to him wagging her tail!

Katie is nursing and she looks so thin and worn out.  I put a new bowl of water just for her and her two kittens under dad's car. Today was in the triple digits like in the past couple of days so I added ice cubes to her bowl as well as the other bowls I have for the boys in different shaded parts of the yard.

Katie has a bunny tail as does one of her kittens

All of them enjoyed a nice nap though I could not find Nico...he is a loner now that Sonny is no longer with us they were very close :-(

A napping Paquito thankfully not in the street but in the yard.  He is sporting his new cat collar.

Elvis is just a mess he is still with his rashes.  He decided to make the former stray dogs' water bucket his new cucha.

Here is the new momma taking a break from her brood.

How did I miss this?

I have mentioned how fat Paquito, Nico, and Katie were getting on several posts going back months.  I was outside two or three days ago when I saw Katie under dad's old car.  That is nothing new as that is where she naps during the day.

I was wearing my old glasses but I said to myself...why does she look so tiny?  I walked closer to the car but when I bent down my head started spinning...darn vertigo!  It was just her.

Later in the afternoon, as I walked to the back yard to feed the cats I saw two kittens about five or six weeks old one with a bunny tail like his mother but when they saw me they went up under the car carriage.

When did she have her babies?  How did I miss this?  The last litter she had was well over a year ago. I had begun to believe that the neighbor had taken her to be fixed.  You know she did not only have two kittens...I am waiting for the other shoe to drop.  Rob, if you are reading this...your saying came to mind..." the gift that keeps on giving" :-(
