To tie or not to tie?

I waiver back and forth on the pros and cons of keeping Pedrito tied up.  Today he gave me more arguments to keep him tied.

I feed him before I feed Tammy or Oscar to avoid fights.  This morning he thumbed his nose at the food I placed before him.

I saw Oscar laying down in the front yard so I went to feed him.  In no time flat Pedrito came running and tried to eat his food...the same food I had given him.  Of course, it ended up in a dog fight. Tammy came out of nowhere to get between them.

I threw water at them but quickly came inside.  I have enough drama in my life to add dog fights to the equation.

  1. It is not about food, it is about dominance known as the pecking order.

    1. Hi Barney! Yes, I know...it was the same when Boris (the dog that died) and Pedrito would go at it. That is how both ended up tied up in separate lots.

Oscar is such a sweet and mild manner dog and Pedrito is always bullying him.

  2. Is there a way to segregate Pedrito during feeding times? Like inside a fence, without access to the other dogs?

    1. No there isn't Suerte.

The fights don't just occur during meal times. Pedrito tries to intimidate Oscar and is always pestering him. Like Barney stated, its the pecking order and Pedrito wants to rule.

  3. I guess I need clarification. These aren't your dogs are they? You are just being a good person and trying to help them. My suggestion is to involve the SPCA or other dog rescue group in your area. Each of those dogs would do much better living with their own family, and you don't need to have to worry about dog fights.

    1. They are not my dogs, since we have a downed fence they got in looking for food but only found water.

Walter had been grazing at the time and I had not had a chance to empty his water container. It broke my heart to see them drinking water like there had not had the vital liquid in a long time.

By "them" I mean Pedrito and Tammy who were strays. Later Boris wondered in and refuse to leave (he is the one that died). Boris and Pedrito also had terrible fights so I had to tie them up.

I think Tammy felt pressured to keep an eye on the property as she was the only dog not tied up and she brought Oscar. Oscar almost looks like he could be her brother. He is a very mild mannered dog and does not give any problems.

In Del Rio we do not have an SPCA and the only rescue group in the area will not come to the county, they only take in animals within the city limits of Del Rio.

This is a terrible problem and the county is aware of it but does nothing about it. That is why I am unable to get Walter and Dulcinea (the neighbors horses) help. The animal control center tells me to call the Sheriff.
