Meet Lola

My parent's house is located in southern Val Verde County and unfortunately is home to many stray dogs and cats. The County did away with its Animal Shelter about 25 years ago due to budget constraints. It actually was not an official shelter but the clinic of a local veterinary.

Many animals wander the streets and I often saw a big female dog wandering around who obviously was lactating many puppies. I have no idea where she lived if she had an owner or was a stray but she seemed to always be pregnant.

Late last year I saw her again or perhaps one of her offspring. I was walking to the gate to call her over when Mr. Joe shooed her away and it really pissed me off. In March 2022 I saw her again this time she had come in through the down fence. I called out to her, she was hesitant at first since she has obviously been run off so often but she warmed up to me. Note she is wearing a collar but when I looked at it...it was worn and you could not even make out who was the entity that issued it or a collar number.

I had a hard time trying to take her picture and petting her at the same time...she was gentle and friendly.

This month she has come for a visit three times and has enjoyed some grub and water. Here she seemed to be taking a break and waiting on me to give her a treat.

I decided to name her Lola but as you know I have a bad habit of naming an animal one name and then they turn out to be the opposite sex.

I think I might have made the same mistake but I will have to get a better look next time. Since it has been so hot this week I have left her a bucket of cool water out for him or her to drink at their leisure.

Today I am missing one cat...Nicolás...he never came for breakfast or dinner but it is not the first time he goes AWOL. Of all the cats he is the one I never worry about because he seems to have other sources of food as he is way too chunky to have gained that weight on my watch alone.

Thank you for visiting Walter's World.

Wind Gusts / Crying Kittens / Missing Cats

Yesterday Wednesday, March 30, 2022, we had some very intense winds practically all day. I usually feed the cats between 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. but I could not even open the kitchen door due to the 44 mph plus wind gusts.

When the winds finally died down to the 20 mph range I was able to go outside but was short two cats...Nicolás and Donald.  Did not worry they are full-grown cats who are capable of hunting for their own food.

In a comment in my prior post, I mentioned that Luna had moved her kittens to the old water heater closet. Since I have been feeding the cats on top of dad's old car since the old washing machine is where I have the bigger winter cucha I saw her eating and made a dash to place a little cardboard box and placed the kitties inside. They were crying, so tiny, with their little eyes closed.

They look a lot bigger than they actually are.

I was worried about them because they kept on crying and Luna did not know how to quiet them down.  I had flashbacks of Molly and her cats crying and she not feeding them leaving them to starve under the kitchen crawl space.

I would later go see how they were doing but found that Luna had removed them from the box and put them farther into the water heater closet so I could not see them much less reach them.

This morning Donald was back but there was no sign of Nicolás. He usually sleeps in the garage/carport as I only bring him into the kitchen when it is very cold outside. I was about to walk to the garage when he came out from behind it but he had a hard time walking as he had an injured front paw probably from the prickly cacti.

I walked toward him to pick him up and bring him inside but he demanded to be put down...so I did and let him come in on his own. For someone that has been missing for a day he did not eat much and he went right to his bed and went to sleep. As I am typing this it is 8:12 p.m. and he is still asleep!

This is his injured paw...it looks swollen
