While I love that Walter has been at Mom's for about a month now...I am at a loss as to why? It seems odd that his owner would let him stay this long. Did the cops issue him a ticket for the filthy conditions of his corral? Is he even in town?
As you know, while I get up early to give mother her medication...for me bedtime is 5:00 a.m. and I usually do not go outside until 9:00 or 10:00 a.m. unless it is trash day. By his body language I can pretty much tell if he has been fed. What I have witnessed is that lately he has been given a very small amount of hay usually around noon. The big bale of hay his owner bought last month remains covered and untouched.
Last week before we left for Uvalde, I made sure I filled up his water container and having this sixth sense that I do...I filled up an additional tub for him. Glad we made it back home after our near run in with the deer and the eighteen wheeler...but what if we had not? Poor Walter would have run out of water by now and his owners would not have had a clue.
Friday, I saw that he appeared to be eating and I went to check it out. It once again broke my heart that he was eating his own feces. We got back late Thursday after stopping at the grocery store and as upset as I was with what happened I forgot all about Walter!
Got in my car and immediately headed to buy him his horse pellets. He was famished and devoured them! His owner is well aware that there is no more native grasses or anything for Walter to graze on. What little he feeds him is not enough for a horse his size.
Dulcinea looked hungry too but I can not take on two horses and besides she has an owner that cares a little more than Walter's.
The guys at the store put his 50 lb bag of pellets in my trunk but I have to tear it open and take down a little at a time until I fill up my five gallon food grade buckets with the corresponding gamma seals to help preserve its freshness.
Walter is a smart horse and he realizes that there is food in my trunk. He has been smelling and licking the outside of my car since then. Today, I was finally able to get down the last of the pellets but the smells still lingers.
Every time I go outside he comes running up to me expecting to be fed, lol, he is starting to act like Ralph.
Speaking of Ralph, yesterday I saw him coming into the yard. Did not jump on the washing machine or on top of dad's old car to meow. Wondered what was wrong? Looked out the window and he was grooming himself like he tends to do after he eats...jajajaja...wonder who fed him now? :D
Today as I was feeding Walter on the north side of the property so his owners would not see (they are on the south side) and become even more irresponsible...Ralph came up to my pant leg meowing and expecting to be fed as well. No free meals at the neighbors today Ralph?
Made him wait but fed him a good meal as another cold front will arrive tonight and besides he has been sneezing a lot lately :(

He goes by many aliases
This morning I got up early as I had a lot of errands to run. Went to go check on him and he had little water and no one had fed him yet. I offered him some water but stubborn Walter refused to drink it.
Kept an eye out for him from the kitchen window but no one had fed him and it was noon. I went and cut him some more green grass and slowly feed it to him but not without first checking to see if his owners were home...they weren't, at least the cars were not there.
I was busy with other stuff and I was not able to make it to Sutherlands until after they had closed so decided to go to Walmart on a Saturday evening! am I crazy? Thankfully it was not crowded. I bought him some horse pellets for senior horses.
Ran into my neighbors...think I have mentioned them...they are the ones that feed Ralph and his pal the dog because their owner never does. We got to talking about Ralph and it turns out they named him Chico!
My neighbor said that she takes her daughter to the bus stop because it is still dark and when she opens the door both the cat and his pal the dog are by the front door waiting to be fed. She said "they think this is McDonald's and they can be fed 24 hours"...we had a good laugh about it.
Told her I had not seen Ralph or Chico in days. She says he visits a lot of homes...jajajaja...no wonder my mother saw him and said "He is fat, I know you have been feeding him". Yep, he looks like he has put on some weigh :)
He did love his first canned meal though.

Grass clippings
It was cold this morning and I did not want to confirm what I already knew...no one had fed or watered him. Last night I gave him the rest of his horse pellets and it wasn't much.
He looked sad especially since I only brought him water and I knew he wanted food.
Got out my handy shears and started cutting the tall grass to tie him over until I could get to town.
He happily munched on it....
Cut him three containers....
Went to purchase him some more horse pellets and was pleasantly surprised that they had gone down in price.
When I passed his house I saw his owner's truck in the driveway...I go to great pains to keep them from seeing me feed him. This afternoon I went to scope out the corral and I am happy to report that they finally filled his water barrel and had given him hay.

Sunday Chit Chat
Post for Sunday - July 14, 2013
Sunday afternoon I saw the kid and his little brother playing soccer in the church parking lot. Later their father Ramón (not his real name) joined them.
I had bought Walter's horse pellets a few days back but had not had the chance to cut open the 50 lb bag and place its contents in plastic containers...with my bad back there is no way I can lift that much weight at once.
Ran out of containers so what I was doing since his owners were outside was dumping his pellets on the ground so I would not be seen feeding him and they thought he was eating poop as that never seems to bother them :-(
It was already past 9:00 p.m. when I went to scope out the area so I could offer him some H2O. Walter's corral is on high ground where our lot is on low. As I was headed there I saw that Ramón was by his corral and had already seen me...so had no alternative but to continue heading that way and greet that horrible man.
I was so surprised he was actually standing by his water barrel filling it up and making sure it did not spill over. We made idle chit chat and I asked him when he was going to let Walter come graze on our property. He said he would probably bring him next weekend...do not know if he is a man of his word of not...sadly, so few men are these days...but that is what he said.

95 degrees and no water
I'm glad I saved him enough for another ration because this morning the kid went off to school without feeding him. First it is morning feedings, then afternoon...then no feedings to speak of :-(
I went into town and bought him some more horse pellets. I was surprised that the kid fed him at 4:00 p.m. but he forgot to water him even though his water barrel was downed.
In light of today's events...I, like millions of Americans...was glued to my television set. I did not get to check on Walter till late.
His water barrel was still empty
This time he did not turn me down when I offered him water. In fact he was glad to see me arriving with some liquid gold. Poor Walter, it got to 95 degrees...probably felt like more with the sun shining on him and no shade to speak of.
He drank 7.5 gallons this evening. I do believe the kid or someone from his house saw me from the window but no one came out.

New Bag of Horse Pellets
This morning I could hear Walter's owner hammering away. He is almost finished with the roof of his cinder block shed.
We had several errands to run in town. When we came back he was finished and he was no where in sight. I recalled that last week he too left on a Tuesday afternoon. His wife's car was not on the driveway and no one appeared to be home, so I went to visit him.
He seemed calm and he had water. I am thinking he got fed before his owner left :)
Late this afternoon I decided to rake some leaves and water the trees and weeds. Saw that the owner's wife and kids came home but no one went to the corral.
I still had his new bag of horse pellets in the mini-van which I had not yet placed in individual containers so decided to do that as we will be taking that vehicle into town tomorrow. Ran out of yogurt and butter containers so decided to feed him the rest which he happily obliged.
Thank you for visiting Walter's World.
