Paquito - Part II

While some of my friends read my main blog sporadically very few read this one. That is why I was surprised when one of my friends called to inquire about Paquito and if I ever found him since I had not mentioned his disappearance the last time we spoke.

Actually, after missing all day Sunday he showed up Monday morning...well at least his loud meows became audible as I was walking to the garage/carport that is in the next lot. His high pitch meows were coming from the roof but I could not see him. I called out to him but it seems he was trapped in an area that joins the kitchen to the main house (the kitchen was a later addition).

I was running late as I had a doctor's appointment and there is no way I was going to be able to get on a ladder and climb up on the roof to get him down. The other cats were soon up on the roof as well...I suppose for moral support?

If you are new to this blog you may not know that Paquito had to have one of his eyes removed when he was a kitten his one good eye has a lot of secretions that have to be removed several times a day along with getting daily eye drops. My best guess is that since he went missing his secretions had shut his eye and he could not see where he was or how to get out of there. I was just glad that he was back and he was alive.

When I came back out he had managed to come out of where he was trapped possibly by the sound of the other cats. I grabbed my step stool and called out to him to come to the lower portion of the roof and he followed my voice commands because I could see his eye was shut as I managed to grab him and bring him down.

Took him inside and washed his eye, I also grabbed several baby wipes to clean his coat as he was filthy!  I fed him but to my surprise, he barely ate something very rare for my fat boy!  I then looked down at my sweater and had to change it as well. Barely made my doctor's appointment on time but at least my Paquito is back home :-)

Paquito is missing

We have been having cold temperatures and strong winds in our area so I have been leaving the door to the mudroom slightly ajar so Paquito and Nico can sleep there and come and go whenever they want.

Last night at 9:36 p.m. I went to check on them but only Paquito was fast asleep in his bed. Since I am an insomniac I get up frequently and check on things, one of them is to check on him since Nico has probably only slept there once or twice.

I made another round at 4:25 a.m. was surprised that he was not there but figured he had a nature call and would come back.  That was not the case so at 8:40 a.m. I bundled up and started looking for him. Noticed that Mr. Joe had fired up his grill so early in the morning. I called out for Paquito and walked around the yard but he was nowhere to be found.

Paquito is not like the other cats that disappear for days for one he eats a lot and likes to be served on time or he will start meowing loudly either by my window, the kitchen door, or even the front door.  By 3:15 p.m. I bundled up got my folding step stool so I could look over the fence and went about trying to find him.

I knew my lot was infested with mesquite trees but I did not realize it had so many cactus plants. While it looks intimidating the cats go to my lot all the time and are familiar with it. I called out to him but no response. I then went to the southern part of the property close to Walter's former stable but did not find him there either.

My last round was before sunset. I sure hope he is alive and comes home soon. 😭

November 2020 Cat Update

I can not believe I have not made a post in a month. Katie has not been back and I am very sorry for that because I truly cared about her and enjoyed her presence. Much like Blanca who is Paquito and Nico's mother it really did not matter if she stayed or left though she was much easier to deal with than Blanca. I just wanted her fixed so neither I nor the neighborhood would be saddled with even more stray cats.

I have made great strides with Katie's now full-grown cats. While at first, they would cringe at my touch they now do not mind it. I have Paquito to thank for that. Seems that for better or for worse they have adopted his ways of dealing with me...which is to meow loudly until I cave in and feed them no matter if they have previously been fed or not!

In order for me to feed them, I forced them to put up with me petting them. While they did not like it at first they learned to associate petting with being fed. I will need this when the border between México and the USA finally opens so I can put them in the cat crate and take them to the vet in Ciudad Acuña, Coahuila, México.

I must say they have me well trained!  Please, I do not want any comments telling me what a bad human owner I am for overfeeding them...that is why I NEVER had a family of my own...it is too difficult to deal with cats much less humans!

It has been cold for four days in a row...depending on where you are reading this from...here in Del Rio, Texas anything in the '30s and '40s is considered COLD.

Paquito has been sleeping in the mudroom with the door slightly ajar so he can come and go for the past four nights. Nico only slept there for one night.

As many of you know who are long time readers of my other blog...I suffer from insomnia...cats do not know this malady. So why don't scientists study them?  I would love to sleep for hours like my cats do 😢

I am so mad and disappointed in Paquito

I am now rethinking if Katie's disappearance was of her choosing or if she was forced to relocate thanks to Mr. Paquito. Last week she came back and I was trying to lure her into the mudroom but when I was unsuccessful I went inside to bring her some food. When I came back outside Paquito was chasing her off the property!

He made me so mad I wanted to spank his behind but he knows when he has pissed me off and stays away. He did the same the following day and since then I have not seen Katie anymore. The good thing is that I know she has other houses that she frequents and that feed her.

Her two now grown kittens are still here even though both Paquito and Nico bully them but they are not budging. We have had some strong winds and chilly temperatures in the area so I made Katie's kittens a "cucha" with an old pillow and a pair of flannel pajamas. Had to wrap old rags on half-gallon milk containers to keep the cucha's from flying off and them not getting too cold for the cats to snuggle next to.

During this cold spell, I partially opened the door to the mudroom so Nico and Paquito could spend the night out of the elements. I placed two cardboard boxes covered with old towels and of course, Paquito chose the bigger box leaving my little fat boy Nico in the smaller one.  I do not know what is wrong with Paquito...grrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

After MIA for three days Katie is back

I was going to write a post about Katie being missing since Friday and being concerned that she had met up with foul play from a raccoon, snake, or stray dog. What was my surprise when at noon I went to change the water in the boy's bowls and there she was as though nothing had happened.

Went to get my binoculars so I could check her out from afar as she won't let me come near her. She looked fine no bites or visible marks on her from what I could tell. Her cats were happy to see her. I wonder where she spent the past three days? Who fed her? I know she like Nico have other houses they frequent but she rarely left the property.

Saturday I even cut through some bushes and pulled out fallen tree limbs on the other side of the property fearing she had somehow gotten trapped. Walked all around in my rubber boots (I do not have snake-proof boots) calling out for her. Well if anything at least I got some yard work done.

Thank you for visiting Walter's World.

P.S. This is ridiculous I have two blogs and while I thought I made a mistake on the last one by posting on my main blog it happened once more. I am certain I was on the Walter's World template and it again wants to post on Terlingua Dreams...grrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Blogger needs to address these problems that I did not even know I had. It might be nice to also fix those links on our Reading List that does not take us to the blogs we desire to read without taking us to another page to de-direct to that blog. It is also taking HOURS once you make a post for it to show up on your reading list or on the people who have you on their sidebar.

Global Cat Day

Global Cat Day on October 16th raises awareness surrounding non-lethal feline programs across the country. More than any other shelter animal, cats and kittens face euthanization at a much higher rate.

My boys and Katie got extra cat treats today. They celebrated by doing what cats do...they slept 😽

I apologize for how this post looks.  I accidentally made it on my other blog but caught it just before I was about to post it.  I proceeded to copy it here but ended up with this. 😕

I have no idea why Blanca has been coming around...

Saturday around noon I heard loud meowing coming from outside the kitchen door. There is a white and beige cat that has been coming around and that Paquito does not like. For new readers, Paquito only has one eye but he does not act like it, that is why I am so protective of him even though he can be a bully and like a typical cat does whatever he wants.

What was my surprise but that it was Momma Cat Blanca...Paquito, Nico, and my late Rudy's mother...who after they were about 16 weeks old up and left them for me to care for as she went on her merry way. The good thing is that I got her fixed prior to that so she would not bring me any more kittens.

Paquito is the spitting image of his mother that is why I thought he was a girl until I took him to the vet when either she injured his eye because she did not want to nurse him anymore or he ran into one of the many prickly plants in our West Texas desert backyard.  Another difference is Paquito has one blue eye while Blanca has yellow ones.

I immediately broke up that future fight and brought him and Nico into the kitchen for their own protection. I wish I could have brought in Katie and her two offspring but as I have mentioned before they are strays and afraid of me even though I am the one who feeds them daily.

I fed her so she would leave but she ate very little and hissed at me and the other cats...Blanca, you are an ungrateful cat!

This afternoon she came again hissing and wanting to fight but this time I ran her off and again brought the boys in. Why is she coming around?

Though whoever created this meme misspelled "apologize" it reminded me of Paquito when he was a baby and Blanca was a good mother to her kittens.

Unsure about Katie

Katie has been missing all day and I do not know why but I think she might have given birth to her new brood. All three cats Paquito, Nico, and Katie are overweight. The last time Katie was pregnant I never saw it coming as unlike some cats she does not expand sideways but carries them on her lower abdomen.

I am not saying she is pregnant but she is overweight. It has been a while since she has gone missing and she rarely skips a meal. Only time will tell.

My fat boys and the smaller cats have been getting a lot of exercise lately. The annual migration of snout-nosed butterflies is in full swing and now some medium-sized yellow ones have also made an appearance. They have been chasing them all over the place.

Some afternoons I sit under the cover of the back patio as our temperatures are still in the high 80's to low 90's during the day and just watch them run, climb trees, and play amongst themselves.  In some ways, it is therapeutic and relaxing.

A Blanca sighting

When Blanca...Paquito and Nico's mother...showed up at the house she did not seem to be a stray or afraid of people. I would say the opposite was true, she followed me everywhere even waiting for me to come back from wherever I happened to have gone.

After her kittens were born (Paquito, Nico, and Rudy) all three would run away when they saw me.  However, Paquito noticed how his mother didn't and would cry loudly when she wanted to be fed so he followed her example and allowed me to pet him.

He still cries loudly by the kitchen door or my bedroom window if he is hungry and feels I need to feed him. 😄

First, it was only little Katie who decided to try the same, and now little Nico is following in her footsteps.  It is so funny to have them meowing in unison

Yesterday instead of going out the kitchen door I tricked them and exited through the front that is when I saw Paquito walking on the southern cinderblock fence and wondered how it was that he was able to get there so fast? Turns out it wasn't him but his mother Blanca.  I seriously thought she had passed away as it has been months since I saw her.

As I mentioned in my main blog yesterday I had a snake scare.  I refer to them as kittens but they no longer are that. I have to go back and figure out more or less how old they are as Katie did not bring them until they were between eight to ten weeks old.

I am now afraid to go out the kitchen door. I will just have to be more vigilant in the future and hope my boys and Katie earn their keep and continue to keep creepy crawlers at bay.

Here is Katie the hero of the day!  I have no idea if she killed the snake or not as I did not go looking for it.

Something is not right with Katie

For those new to my blog...Katie is a little stray that has been hanging around the house for about a year and a half. She is a pretty little thing with a bunny tail and this is the second litter she has had at Mom's house.

I have tried to make friends with her but like most strays who have never had the benefit of a caring human or even a place to call home...she is very leery of people and won't allow anyone to come near her.

I have noticed that for the past three days she has not wanted to eat. I thought perhaps due to the high temperatures she might be suffering from heatstroke or something. Like I mentioned before she takes off running if I invade her personal space.

Late this afternoon after I fed her now full-grown kittens I was curious as to WHY she did not join them. That is when I saw that one of her front paws was enlarged and that there was blood by the side of the old washing machine in which I feed her and her brood.

Katie with her enlarged paw

I wish she would let me help her. One of my dear friends told me to put Aloe Vera on her paw but there is NO WAY she is ever going to allow me to let that happen.

I have unsuccessfully tried to upload pictures of her paw this evening. This new Blogger is making it hard for us to use the "old version". If this keeps up they are going to lose a lot of older bloggers as we tend to not be as tech-savvy as the younger ones.

A marking I had not noticed on Katie and her kittens

I have mentioned before that both Katie and her kittens are afraid of me and elusive to photograph.  The few pictures I have of them I have taken from afar. Since I do not have a camera I use a cellphone and I have to crop the pictures which result in pictures of low-grade quality.

I was downloading some pictures of them when it became apparent to me that they had a marking I had not noticed before.  See for yourselves.

Here is Momma Katie upper left savoring her food and little Nico on the center giving me a "human let me eat" look.

Here is my favorite Little Katie (temporary name)...

Do you all see the letter M marking they all have?  Little Katie is growing up so fast and is so curious.

July 2020 - Cat Update

I have been so busy I have not had a chance to update this blog. Paquito has pretty much decided to make the kitchen his.  In the mornings as I am watering the trees, my little one-eyed Jack is busy watching me so he can rush in when I go back inside either for food for the other cats or to retrieve something I forgot.

Paquito refuses to eat outside he demands to be fed inside and in a plate separate from Nico's.  He then sleeps until the afternoon...goes out for a quick bathroom break and a snack...then knocks out until dinner time or until I put him out.

Nico my poor baby is now pretty much a loner now. He and Rudy used to be so close when they were little and then he went MIA. Sonny took his place then he went missing as well and Nico's behavior changed.  He became nervous, fidgety, and more of a scary cat. I try to give him more attention but with my other duties that is not always possible.

Katie and her kittens continue to be afraid of me but on a funny note, little Katie noticed how Paquito starts crying loudly in the morning either by my bedroom window or by the kitchen door if I do not come out to feed them on time. Lately little Katie (I still do not know what gender they might be) albeit from afar...they all have gotten the social distancing down pat...will start meowing loudly until I bring the food out!

I have been wanting to photograph them as they are growing so fast but they are elusive little rascals and I do not always have the phone with me to capture their special moments.  This afternoon I was able to catch little Katie and her mother on top of the old water containers that I used when I had the stray dogs.

Meet Little Katie and Little Nico

Katie's two kittens are growing by leaps and bounds.  I have been wanting to take a picture of them but they are too fast for me. Add to that the fact that I seldom if ever have my cellphone with me.  Today I finally got a chance to photograph them after they ate their supper and were less prone to take off on me.

I have not given either one a name yet...I am now only referring to them as who they currently look like. I learned my lesson with Blanca's kittens, she is totally white and for some reason, I thought Paquito was a girl only to be told otherwise by the vet so I did not have a name ready for him or I would have named him Jack as in One-Eyed Jack.

This is Little Katie for now who is the spitting image of her mom including the bunny tail.

For some reason, they are afraid of me just like Blanca's kittens were when they were little and now Paquito and Nico follow me everywhere. Nico was with me at the time and I think that also helped in them not running away.

This is Nico Jr. though my Nico is not the father as he is fixed.

I was finally able to capture both of them in a single photograph with Nico's tail in the shot :-)

Morning chores / A sad find

I have no idea if Blogger has changed to their new format or not...as I have not made a post in more than a week on my main blog and even longer on this one...guess we shall soon find out.

I woke up early this morning since today is trash day in our Precinct as we live out in the country.  It has been in the triple digits lately and I have not been motivated to keep up with my yard work...but today I had no choice.

By getting an early start I could beat the heat. The cats were happy to get their breakfast without having to serenade me by my bedroom window.

I went ahead with my chores and they went to do what cats do...run around chasing each other and climbing trees...to then taking a nap.

After I finished I went to look for my camera got a picture of Paquito, one of Nico and then one of Elvis.  However, when I approached him he looked odd...that is when I realized he had passed.

I felt sad as when this cat showed up at our house it was evident that he had had a hard life.  He was with us for about eight months.  Rest in peace Elvis...

Katie and her kittens

I remember Katie's last litter...she would bring them...then out of the blue take them elsewhere. The same holds true for her recent offspring. They had made their home under dad's old car and boom...they disappeared.

It was late in the afternoon a couple of days ago when I looked out the kitchen window and I saw something move in the small tree by dad's car. Sure enough it was her two kittens learning to go up and down the tree. One of them which for some reason I think it is a girl is the spitting image of Katie including her bunny tail. The other looks just like Nico but he is fixed so he is not the father.

My cellphone sucks so I was not able to take a good picture of them.  This one is when she is nursing them but again it is not a good quality photo.  Hopefully, I will get a chance to photograph them in the not too distant future.

I love watching the little kittens run around playing with tree sticks and limbs.  It reminded me of when my boys were small. Though I think they must be eight to nine weeks old.  I still do not believe she only had two kittens. Maybe she will bring the rest soon?

Incognito

Yesterday I was taking down some hand washables from my makeshift clothesline when I inadvertently looked up and was scared to death...I thought it was some sort of wild creature!

As usual, I did not have my phone on me so I went inside the house hoping that when I came back out Elvis would still be in the same location so I could document it.

So this is where he hides out high above the ground where he can survey what is going on around him as well as keeping an eye on me when I exit the kitchen door.

He blends in with the color of the mesquite tree.

As long as he does not pester me...I am fine with his new hideout now that I know its location.

Trip to Tractor & Supply

Yesterday when I finally drove into town I decided to stop at Tractor & Supply to pick up larger bags of pet food since their associates take them to my car and set them up in the front and back seat so I can easily cut the top with scissors and then fill my five-gallon buckets one at a time as you know I have a bad back and 20 lbs is the most I can carry...though I never push it to that much weight.

I was a little hesitant to go in since there were several cars in the parking lot more than are usually here...well post-pandemic.  I already had my face mask and gloves on before I left the house so headed inside the store.

I grabbed their special cart and quickly got what I needed. I must say that they were well stocked.

On my way out I passed by the chick aisle.  I think for those that know or have the desire to raise chickens now that eggs are so expensive this would be a good time to do so.

Unfortunately, it would not be beneficial for me...too much work!

Mr. Joe (neighbor) has free-range chickens and while in our property their offspring have been eaten by both Paquito and Nico though they had just finished eating...just part of their instinct :-(

Bitter sweet day

Today May 5th marks three years since Pedrito one of the four stray dogs I fostered disappeared.  Maybe "foster" is not the correct term since he came to mom's house on his own and no one ever showed any interest in adopting him.

I remember the last time I saw him like it was yesterday.  It was a Friday afternoon and he was pressuring me to feed him, he ate and off he went into the sunset.  I recall telling my mother that Pedrito had a better social life than I did...he probably had a date and was going to celebrate Cinco de Mayo with her.

I miss you my little one...:-(

Elvis is becoming a bully / A day of cat naps

Elvis is becoming a bully and is not letting Katie eat though I have set up different feeding stations for both. What pisses me off is that she is becoming subservient to his wishes.  If she eats in one he runs over to push her away and starts eating and vice versa.

She will not come to the mudroom unless I leave but I have to leave the door cracked so she can enter and that is when Elvis tries to rush in and I am not having any of that. Why is she so afraid of me? I had the same problem with Tammie the stray dog...I could never gain her confidence...yet one day the telephone guy or was it the cable guy came and she ran up to him wagging her tail!

Katie is nursing and she looks so thin and worn out.  I put a new bowl of water just for her and her two kittens under dad's car. Today was in the triple digits like in the past couple of days so I added ice cubes to her bowl as well as the other bowls I have for the boys in different shaded parts of the yard.

Katie has a bunny tail as does one of her kittens

All of them enjoyed a nice nap though I could not find Nico...he is a loner now that Sonny is no longer with us they were very close :-(

A napping Paquito thankfully not in the street but in the yard.  He is sporting his new cat collar.

Elvis is just a mess he is still with his rashes.  He decided to make the former stray dogs' water bucket his new cucha.

Here is the new momma taking a break from her brood.
