Do they really have nine lives?

I was bringing in the last of the laundry late on Monday - April 29th when Paquito ran in front of me without me seeing him and almost made me fall...all because he wanted to go inside the kitchen even after he had already gotten fed.

As usual, I started yelling at him went to put the laundry on the couch and set out to put his behind outside.  When I finally corraled him and opened the kitchen door, I saw this white ball running towards the porch and I was so glad to see it was Blanca (Momma Cat).

It had been more than a week since I had seen her and after the chat, with the neighbor, I just knew she was dead!  So now I had to put Paquito back in the house and feed her or there was going to be a fight between them.

She was very hungry and thirsty but aside from that she looked well.  Do they really have nine lives?  If so I hope she still has a couple left.

Bad Cat

I feed the cats twice daily and I give them good portions so they have no excuse for being hungry.  I was washing dishes and as I looked out the window saw Sonny climbing down the tree with something red in his mouth and took off running with it.

Paquito and Nico were napping on top of the trash can but were awaken with the commotion.  Of course, they also take off running after Sonny and his "catch".

Being the bully that Paquito is he took the poor robin away from Sonny and commence to eat it himself!  Paquito was not hungry he eats more than the three cats combined.

While I know this is in a cat's nature, it does not mean I like it. We have plenty of doves and crows that poop all over the place and I would not even bat an eye if they chose to snack on one. Why kill a pretty robin that has a nest high up on the tree and probably babies...bad cat!!

Wondering about Momma Cat

When I was talking to Mr. Joe's wife the other morning she mentioned that a white cat had been run over on our street corner.  Like myself, she and her family are animal lovers and have taken in their own fair share of strays.

She had stopped to check on it but it looked dead. She went back to her truck to get some paper towels to move it out of the way so other cars would not run over it.  When she safely placed it by the fence she was surprised that it got up and ran into mom's yard.

There is a large stray population in this area but I have only seen two white cats...Blanca (momma cat) and her son Paquito (my terrible now full grown cat).

I have not seen Blanca in a couple of days and I am hoping she is not dead.

My morbid fear

I have to first mention that I have a morbid fear of mice and snakes. When we first moved from the city to the county many moons ago there were hardly any people, as a matter of fact, we were the tenth family to move to this then new subdivision.

We were the only family on this street for many years. There were a lot of snakes then including but not limited to rattlers. Thankfully the ones I came across were brightly colored and stood out.  My dad came very close to being bitten by a coralillo snake curled up by his banana plants. Needless to say after beheading it he also burnt down the plants!

We have always had cats since moving to this location and have lost several to those darn snakes!  One of the reasons my parents had a cinder block fence built over chain link or other material was precisely to make it harder for snakes to come into the property.

I do not know if to credit the cinder block fence or the fact that more people started moving here bringing with them their cats that snake sightings declined.

When Blanca (Momma cat) first started coming around I did not want to feed her, but I always gave her water as Del Rio is in the desert and gets very hot during the summer. While she can eat mice and fast food litter bugs throw out their window she is not capable of being able to open a water faucet.

One day I was going out the kitchen door when I saw this greenish/grayish colored snake and freaked out!  That is when I noticed that it was dead and had obviously been killed by Blanca who was very pleased with herself and puzzled at my reaction.

I have no idea what kind of snake it was whether it was poisonous or not...it did not matter...I was just glad she killed it and it was then that she earned a place in our family and in exchange I also adopted her three kittens...Paquito, Rudy, and Nico.

Two days ago JO a fellow blogger made a post that made my hair stand on end http://momslittlerunaway.blogspot.com/2019/04/i-broke-my-own-rule.html

You all be careful out there.

Two more strays make themselves at home

The weeds keep on growing and I keep on procrastinating and have neither tried to tackle them myself or called Pollito (yard man). The boys have the run of the property and they have been picking up these little black balls on their coats.

Only Sunny posed for a picture but Nico and Paquito were covered as well.

These two cats are strays that used to hang around by the fence but have now become friends with the boys and keep on inching ever closer to the kitchen porch and relaxing on top of the propane tank.

I do not mind them coming over but my boys seem to be bipolar and sometimes they let them chill with them and other times they beat them up and I do not like that.

The cat on top of the propane tank is a Calico without a tail that runs like a bunny. Unfortunately, like most Calico's she is a girl.  I have named her Katie. The dark gray cat is one of many that color in the area and whom I have confused with Rudy Gay the black cat that never came back :-(

Warning to cats

I have been chasing Nico around so I could take a picture of his skin coat. I noticed two days ago that it seems like his hair is getting grayer, becoming less abundant and looks like he has lost some weight. This is odd for a cat that just turned one-year-old.

When I was finally able to take his photograph my concern for his skin issues and his weight are not obvious in this picture, in fact, he looks overweight.

Sonny was vomiting the other morning and I have no idea why.

Paquito is still draining pink fluid from his only eye and refuses to let me place eye drops on it.  The Vet said I had to do the drops four times a day...I am lucky if he lets me do one.

I have already warned them that there is no way I am taking them to the Vet until after Easter is over and done with.  There is no way I am going to be in line for two plus hours unless one of them is dying.

Finally got Paquito neutered

I had to have Paquito at Clinica Veterinaria Chavarria in Ciudad Acuña between 8:00 and 9:00 a.m. or lose my appointment.  I barely slept last night thinking he might pull a fast one on me like he did last month and go MIA (missing in action).

He was right by the kitchen door hoping to be served breakfast little did he know that was not possible since he had to be "fasting".  I was not ready yet but decided to place him in the cat carrier for fear he might go looking for food elsewhere.

Blogger JudithK gave me the best advice for quickly getting cats in their carrier.  Put the carrier upside down with the door facing the ceiling and simply drop them in. Quick and easy. However, nothing is easy with Paquito and he screamed, cried and clawed at the door.  I took the carrier outside and used an old nightgown to cover it and it helped to soothe him.

Parking is limited and I had to walk two blocks with him crying and moving side to side but we got him taken care of.  When I picked him up this afternoon he was calmer since he was still under sedation and had been given something for the pain. He slept all the way home.

When we arrived I gave him his food which he quickly consumed and then he went to his bed in the back bathroom / storage room / shed.

A reader e-mailed me asking how much I paid for Nico's surgery. In case anyone else is interested this particular vet charges $1,600.00 Mexican Pesos divided by today's rate of $17.30 equals $92.49 USD. This particular clinic takes your US dollars at $18.00 Mexican Pesos or $88.89 American Dollars. They also accept credit cards.

It has been two days since his surgery and he seems to be doing well.  So well in fact that he did not even show up for breakfast.  I panicked and went looking for him but was unsuccessful. I did notice a bunch a bird feathers by the tree and I knew he must have had a tasty snack and was probably enjoying a nap.

Mr. Paquito finally showed up at 2:30 p.m. demanding to be fed!
